Magic

Magic is one of the first ideas children fall in love with: a wave of a hand, a wish that comes true, a door that leads somewhere impossible. For young children the line between what is real and what is imagined is still soft, and stories about magic sit right on that line. A calm, carefully made story gives a child room to enjoy the wonder, ask questions about it, and carry the pretend play back into their own games.

For 3-year-olds

Three is when pretend play takes off, and a child starts casting spells with a stick in the garden. Magic becomes a tool for wishing: fixing something broken, getting somewhere far away, making a friend appear. Look for stories where the magic has a clear cause and a clear result, and where a problem gets solved within a few minutes. Characters who are kind about their powers matter here, because a three-year-old copies the tone as readily as the wand-waving.

For 4-year-olds

Four-year-olds start asking the real question out loud: could that actually happen? They enjoy magic more once they can place it firmly in the pretend box, and they notice when a story cheats. Look for a world with rules that hold up, where magic complicates things as often as it fixes them and characters still have to think, try, and sometimes fail. Mild suspense is fine now, as long as the story settles before it ends.

For 5-year-olds

At five, children want the system behind the magic: who can do what, what it costs, what goes wrong when it is used carelessly. Longer stories with a real problem and a villainish figure become interesting, and a bit of tension is part of the appeal. Look for stories where the character's own courage or honesty decides the outcome, not the spell. Watch that any threat stays proportionate, because a five-year-old still replays scary images at bedtime.

For 6-year-olds

Six-year-olds hold fiction and reality apart comfortably, so magic turns into a place to think about bigger things: fairness, loyalty, what you owe a friend, what happens when someone has more power than the others. They can follow a story that runs across several episodes and remember details from earlier. Look for worlds that stay consistent and for magic that carries the meaning of the story rather than serving as a shortcut out of every difficulty.
