Story time

Story time is the moment a child steps into a world made of words: someone tells or reads a tale, and the child follows along, picturing it, wondering what happens next. Long before they can read, children learn how stories work, that events follow each other, that people want things, that endings can be surprising or comforting. A calm, well made story series gives them the pace to hold a story in their head instead of just watching pictures go by.

For 2-year-olds

At two, a story is mostly rhythm, pictures and a familiar voice. Toddlers listen for the sound of language, join in on repeated phrases and point at what they recognise. Look for short stories with one simple thing happening at a time, lots of repetition, and pauses long enough for your child to name what they see. A story about going to bed, losing a toy or greeting a friend is plenty of plot at this age.
