Activity
Science
Science for young children starts long before facts and diagrams. It is the pull to touch, tip, mix and ask why, and the slow discovery that the world behaves in ways you can notice and predict. A calm, well made show about science gives a child language for what they already sense, and shows grown ups and children treating a question as something worth taking seriously rather than something to answer in a hurry.
For 2-year-olds
At two, science is entirely physical. Water pours, blocks fall, a bug moves and your child watches with total attention. What helps at this age is not explanation but naming: seeing a familiar object up close and hearing the word for it, over and over. Look for a slow pace, plenty of quiet looking, and repetition your child can join in with. If a moment repeats each episode, that predictability is doing real work.

Eddie, a boy whose favourite thing is space, gets ready to go stargazing in his garden and is joined by his friend Akeel. A guiding voice walks him through each step: choosing a clear spot, setting out chairs, a torch and binoculars, dressing warmly, waiting for dark and turning off lights, then looking up at stars, planets and constellations. Eddie shares facts and is reminded to check whether Akeel has any questions. When it is time to stop, Eddie is reluctant, but Akeel reassures him he can stargaze again, and the episode closes with a recap of the steps.

A boy named Eddie is guided through what happens at an optician visit, from arriving with Mum and waiting to be called, to a series of eye tests in a special room. A calm narrator explains each step while Eddie tries on glasses, looks into the picture machine and sits through a test in a darkened room. The optician tells him his eyes are perfectly healthy, so he will not need glasses today. Eddie is briefly let down, then delighted when he is given a pair of sunglasses to wear.
For 3-year-olds
Three is the age of why. Questions arrive faster than answers, and most of them are about animals, weather, bodies and where things come from. A good show at this stage holds one idea for a whole episode instead of skipping between many, and lets a character wonder out loud before anything is explained. Watch for a story that leaves room for your child to answer back at the screen, and for answers simple enough to repeat at dinner.

For 4-year-olds
Four year olds start guessing what will happen next, then checking. That is the beginning of real scientific thinking, and it matters more than any fact they memorise. Look for episodes where someone tries something, gets it wrong, and tries a different way without anyone treating the mistake as a failure. Ideas that transfer to the kitchen table or the garden are worth extra, because at this age children want to do the thing themselves straight after watching.

For 5-year-olds
By five, children want the actual explanation, not a reassuring one. They can follow how one thing causes another across several steps, and they notice when an answer dodges the question. Shows that hold up here give a genuine reason, show where the knowledge came from, and connect a small observation to a bigger system, like weather, habitats or the human body. A clear, unhurried voice matters more than fast visuals now.
