Generosity

Generosity is one of the first ways children learn that their actions land on someone else. For young children it starts small: handing over a toy, sharing a snack, noticing that a friend has nothing. A calm, well-made series can show that moment slowly enough for a child to see both sides, the giving and the receiving, without turning it into a lesson.

For 2-year-olds

At two, giving is mostly physical. A toddler hands something over, takes it back, and watches your face to see what happens. Sharing is not yet a choice they understand, so the value lies in the warm feeling around it. Look for slow stories where one character offers something and the other responds with clear delight, in simple pictures and few words. Repetition helps here; the same giving gesture returning across a story is what makes it stick.

The Nest

In a spring meadow, Little Nutbrown Hare and Little Field Mouse decide to build their own nest to play in. They gather twigs, leaves and grass and keep fixing it as it turns out too weak, too prickly and then too tight for them both. When it no longer suits them, they offer it to a squirrel, a fox and Big Nutbrown Hare before it finally becomes a home for a bird. They end the day playing with friends, deciding the whole meadow is their own great big nest.

Along the way they meet a bluebird, an otter and other animals who each offer a find, from acorns and eggshells to sparkly stones. Meanwhile Big Nutbrown Hare follows the trail his son has left to find him. They reunite at nightfall, and the father tells his son he is the greatest treasure of all before they share their finds under the spring moon.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds start to notice that other people want things too, though their own wanting still wins most of the time. Stories that show a small hesitation before giving are useful, because that is exactly where your child lives. Look for series where the giving is concrete and visible: a shared cookie, a turn with a favourite toy, a helping hand. Avoid stories that shame a character for holding on; at this age reluctance is normal, not naughty.

Her friend Rafia shows her that scuff marks are 'memories' from playing, and Alma decides to play freely. Her team scores the winning goal, and afterward she happily passes the well-worn cleats on to her little brother.

For 4-year-olds

Around four, children can hold two feelings at once: I want this, and I want my friend to be happy. That makes generosity a real decision for the first time. Good stories at this age let a character weigh it up out loud, and show that giving sometimes costs something. Watch for series where friendships have texture, with small disagreements and repairs, so your child sees generosity as part of getting along rather than a rule to obey.

For 5-year-olds

Five-year-olds can be genuinely thoughtful. They plan surprises, notice who was left out, and give things away without being asked. They also start to sense unfairness sharply. Stories that work now go beyond objects into time, attention and kindness towards someone outside the friend group. Look for series with a slightly longer arc, where a generous act early on matters later, and where a character's motives get to be mixed rather than purely good.
