Sadness

Sadness is one of the first big feelings a child meets, and it arrives long before the words to explain it do. A missing parent, a broken toy, a friend who says no: all of it can land hard in a small body. A calm, well-made story about sadness gives children a safe place to watch the feeling happen to someone else, see that it passes, and borrow the words for their own.

For 2-year-olds

At two, sadness is mostly physical and immediate. It comes with tears, a turned-away face, arms up for comfort, and it usually has one clear cause: someone left, something broke, something ended. Look for stories that stay slow and quiet in those moments, name the feeling in one or two plain words, and follow it quickly with a hug or a hand. Long stretches of distress are too much here. Your toddler needs to see the comfort arrive.

Three-year-olds are starting to put a name on what they feel, often out loud and often after the fact. Sadness at this age comes with disappointment: the visit is over, the game is finished, the answer was no. Helpful stories let a character look sad, say so, and be met by someone who listens instead of fixing it right away. A predictable return to normal by the end of the story matters, because it teaches that this feeling has an ending.

Around four, children notice sadness in other people and begin to feel a pull to do something about it. They also start to realise their own actions can make a friend sad. Look for stories where a character spots that someone is upset, asks about it, and offers something small: a place to sit, a shared toy, an apology. This is also the age where a story can show that saying sorry and feeling better are two separate steps.
