Swimming
Swimming is one of the first big physical skills a child works toward, and it carries a lot of feeling with it: the shock of cold water, the pull of floating, the pride of letting go of the edge. A calm, well-made episode about water lets a child rehearse all of that from the safety of the couch, long before their own lesson starts. Seeing familiar characters hesitate, try, and enjoy the water gives children words and pictures for something they are still figuring out with their bodies.
For 2-year-olds
At two, water is mostly a sensory experience: splashing in the bath, stamping in a puddle, being held in a pool. A toddler is not learning to swim so much as learning that water is safe and fun. Look for episodes where water appears in small, everyday amounts, with slow images, gentle sound and a grown-up close by. Loud pool scenes or big waves are more than a two-year-old needs; a warm bath, a paddling moment or a duck on a pond is plenty.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds often have real feelings about water now: they love it or they do not want their face wet. This is the age of first swimming lessons, armbands and clinging to the side. Episodes help most when a character shows that same hesitation and gets time to warm up, without being teased or hurried. Watch for stories where trying counts as success, and where an adult stays nearby and calm rather than pushing the child in.

For 4-year-olds
By four, swimming becomes something a child practises and measures themselves against, often next to friends or a sibling who can already do it. Comparison and impatience come with that. The most useful episodes show effort over time: a character who cannot do it yet, keeps practising, and gets a little further. Water safety also lands at this age, so look for stories where rules around water are shown as normal and sensible, not as a warning that frightens.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds can hold a longer story about water, including some tension: a character out of their depth, a rescue, a promise to stay where it is shallow. They understand cause and effect well enough to follow why a rule exists. Look for episodes that build a little suspense and then resolve it clearly, so your child leaves with a sense of competence rather than fear. Curiosity about what lives under the surface fits this age too.

For 6-year-olds
At six, many children swim well enough to be playful and confident, and their interest widens from their own body to the water itself: currents, depth, animals that swim, why some things float. Episodes that explain how swimming works, in the water and in nature, land well now. Look for stories that respect what your child already knows and add something real, and that treat caution as knowledge and skill rather than as something to be scared of.
