Building

Building is how young children discover that the world can be shaped by their own hands. Stacking, connecting, knocking down and trying again teaches cause and effect, patience and the idea that a mistake is information rather than failure. A calm, well-made series about building gives a child language for what they are already doing on the living room floor, and often sends them straight back to their blocks afterwards.

For 2-year-olds

At two, building is mostly stacking and toppling, done for the pleasure of the crash. A toddler is learning that objects balance, fall and can be picked up again, and that repeating an action gives the same result. Look for a series that stays with one simple action long enough to follow, names things plainly as they appear, and lets the tower fall without anyone becoming upset. Slow camera work and generous pauses matter more than story at this age.

They end the day playing with friends, deciding the whole meadow is their own great big nest.

When a wave takes it anyway, their grandmother reminds them that as long as there is sand they can always build a new one. For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds start building with something in mind, a house, a bridge, a bed for a toy, and they meet the gap between the idea and what their hands can do. That gap brings frustration, so it helps when a story shows a collapse being met calmly and tried a second time. Watch for simple naming of shapes, sizes and tools, and for characters who ask a friend for help rather than giving up or being rescued instantly.

For 4-year-olds

By four, a child can hold a plan in their head and describe it before starting, and building becomes social.
