Behaviour
Planning
Planning is how a child moves from wanting something to actually getting there: thinking of a goal, working out the steps, and staying with it when something goes wrong. For young children this starts with simple routines and grows into real projects with friends. A calm, well made series can show that thinking out loud, so the child hears a plan being made, tried, and repaired.
For 2-year-olds
At two, planning lives inside routine. A child is learning that things happen in an order, that shoes come before the door and washing hands comes before food. Look for a series with a predictable shape the child can hold onto, one small action at a time, and a slow enough pace that each step is visible before the next arrives. Repeated songs or phrases marking the moves help a toddler feel the sequence rather than follow it as an idea.

For 3-year-olds
Three year olds can keep a small goal in mind for a few minutes: build the tower, find the missing sock, get to the picnic. They still lose the thread easily and rarely see a step ahead. Helpful here are characters who say out loud what they are going to do and then do it, with two or three clear steps and a visible result at the end. When the plan wobbles, an adult or friend nearby who helps without taking over gives the child a model worth copying.

For 4-year-olds
By four a child can gather what a plan needs beforehand and notice when it is not working. This is the age of the plan that fails halfway. Look for stories where the first idea falls apart and the characters stop, think, and try something different without the mood collapsing. Sharing out jobs matters too, since four year olds are starting to plan alongside others. A clear beginning, a snag in the middle, and a solution the characters reached themselves is the shape that teaches most.

For 5-year-olds
Five year olds can hold a plan across a longer stretch and think a step ahead: if we do this, then that will happen. They enjoy checking afterwards whether it actually worked. Series that carry one project through a whole story, with a moment of looking back at what went well, match this thinking. Watch for characters who ask questions, gather information before deciding, and adjust when the facts change. Negotiating a shared plan with friends, including who does what, is worth as much as the plan itself.

For 6-year-olds
At six, planning becomes a project. A child can imagine obstacles before they arrive, prepare a second option, and keep a goal alive over days. Friendship complicates it: plans now involve other people with their own ideas, and the negotiation is half the work. Look for stories with more room for the characters to disagree, divide roles, and revise together, and for endings that let a plan half succeed rather than land neatly. Reflecting on what they would do differently is the piece that carries into real life.
