Imagination

Imagination is how young children try out the world before they can live it: a spoon becomes a rocket, a blanket becomes a cave, a worry becomes a story with an ending. Screen time can feed that, or flatten it. A calm, well made show gives a child room to picture things, leaves gaps their own mind fills in, and sends them back to their own play with new ideas.

For 2-year-olds

At two, imagination starts with imitation. A toddler feeds a doll, stirs an empty pot, or copies what a grown up did an hour ago. Pretend play is short, physical, and tied to real objects. Look for a show with a slow pace and familiar things in it: a bath, a picnic, a favourite toy. When the pictures stay simple and the sounds stay soft, a two year old has room to notice one idea at a time and carry it into their own play.

For 3-year-olds

The line between real and imagined is still soft, so a scary picture stays vivid long after the screen is off. Look for a show where the imagined part grows out of an ordinary day and clearly comes back to it, and where any tension resolves before the end.
