Sharing

Sharing is one of the first big social lessons of early childhood, and it asks a lot of a young child: giving up something you want, right now, for someone else. It grows slowly, from grabbing to waiting to genuinely offering, and it needs practice rather than lectures. A calm, carefully made story lets a child watch that struggle happen at a safe distance, see the feelings it stirs up, and notice that things usually turn out fine.

For 2-year-olds

At two, sharing is barely possible yet. Ownership has just clicked into place, so 'mine' is a real discovery rather than selfishness, and most play still happens side by side rather than together. Look for stories where a single object passes slowly between two characters, with plenty of repetition and a warm adult or older friend nearby. It helps when reluctance is shown as ordinary, not as naughtiness, and when the pace leaves room to watch what happens next.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds can share, but usually only with support and rarely on the first try. Waiting is the hard part, because a minute feels endless when someone else is holding the toy. Stories work best here when the waiting is made visible, through a clear turn, a song, or a simple routine that marks whose moment it is. Feelings should be named out loud, and the reward of sharing should arrive soon enough for a three-year-old to connect it to what they gave up.

For 4-year-olds

By four, sharing has become social. Children are building real friendships, and handing over a toy is one of the ways they keep a playmate close. Fairness starts to matter, often loudly. The most useful stories at this age let the characters work it out themselves, with adults staying in the background, and show sharing that goes beyond objects: taking turns with a role in a game, letting someone else pick, making room for another idea.

For 5-year-olds

Five-year-olds can argue about fairness on purpose, and they notice the difference between everyone getting the same and someone getting what they need. That makes room for stories with a genuine conflict, where two characters both have a point and neither is simply wrong. Look for a middle stretch where the disagreement sits unresolved for a while, and for repair afterwards, an apology, a rethought plan, a second attempt. That is where the thinking happens.

For 6-year-olds

At six, sharing widens into generosity and belonging: sharing space, time, attention, credit for an idea, a place in the group. Children this age can hold a longer thread, so stories can let a situation build across a whole episode. Worth looking for is a character who gives up something that genuinely costs them, a group that negotiates without an adult refereeing, and an ending that allows a little leftover disappointment instead of tidying every feeling away.
