Learning together

Learning together is about the moments when a child figures something out alongside someone else, a grown-up, a sibling, a friend, or a character on screen who wonders out loud. Young children learn best in company: they copy, ask, repeat, and check the reaction of the person next to them. A calm, well-made series about this leaves room for your child to answer, guess and wonder along, instead of racing ahead with the answer.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds ask questions constantly and start to enjoy being the one who knows. A series that suits this stage asks something and then waits, letting your child shout the answer before a character confirms it. Small everyday puzzles work better than big lessons: finding something that is missing, sorting, naming, noticing what changed. The learning is often social too, characters figuring things out side by side, which mirrors how your child learns with you.

The episode ends with Duck giving the little shallots gentle 'lessons' in the garden.

There they meet a large green Stegosaurus and work out how its back plates help it cope with the heat. A live-action segment with a paleontologist, Dr. Scott, compares the Stegosaurus to an elephant and shares real facts about the animal. The episode returns to the family before closing.

For 4-year-olds

By four, your child can hold on to a question across a whole story and enjoy testing an idea. This is the age for gentle investigation: guessing what will happen, trying it, and seeing whether the guess was right. Look for a series where characters wonder aloud, disagree politely and check together, so your child hears that not knowing yet is a normal step. Conversations afterwards tend to matter as much as the episode itself.

For 5-year-olds

Five-year-olds can follow an explanation with several steps and connect it to something they already know. They enjoy real information, how things work, where things come from, why something behaves the way it does, and they will happily correct you. A good series at this stage models asking a good question, gathering information from people or books, and drawing a conclusion out loud. Learning together now often means your child teaching you what they picked up.
