Following instructions

Following instructions is one of the first ways a small child joins in with the world around them: listening, holding a request in mind, and doing something with it. It starts with a single friendly ask and grows into following a plan with several steps. A calm, well-made series can model this without pressure, showing characters who listen, forget, try again, and get there.

For 2-year-olds

At two, an instruction works best when it is one step, spoken slowly, and tied to something the child can see. Toddlers understand far more than they can say, so they answer with their hands and feet rather than words. Look for a series that asks for one small action at a time, then pauses long enough for a child to actually do it. Repetition helps here, and so does a warm voice that never rushes or corrects sharply.

Little Nutbrown Hare and his father, Big Nutbrown Hare, spend a spring morning in the meadow where the father teaches his son to play hide and seek. Across several tries the little hare keeps forgetting a rule, first to be quiet, then to stay still, then to actually hide, before finally getting it right with a mouse and a squirrel joining in. Because they stay quiet and still, they get to watch birds and pheasants up close without scaring them off. On the walk home the two share how much they love each other.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds can hold two steps together, especially inside a familiar routine like tidying up or getting ready to go out. They also begin to test what happens when they ignore a request, which is part of learning that instructions come from people, not rules in the air. Look for stories built on predictable sequences, with songs or refrains that carry the order along. Characters who forget a step and calmly go back are useful models.
