Making friends

Making friends is one of the first big social tasks of early childhood, and it is harder than it looks. Children have to notice another child, join in, share, and repair things when they go wrong. A calm, well-made series can show all of that at a pace a child can follow, giving words and examples for feelings they cannot yet explain themselves.

For 2-year-olds

At two, friendship mostly means playing near another child rather than truly with them. Toddlers copy what they see, hand over a toy, then want it straight back. Look for something slow and repetitive, where two characters simply do something together and one small moment of sharing or comforting stands out. Clear faces, gentle voices and plenty of pauses matter more than any story about friendship.

Misunderstandings, hurt feelings and forgiveness can be handled with more nuance now, and a story can hold a friendship problem across a whole episode. Series that suit this age let a character be wrong, feel it, and choose to make it right. Slightly longer plots and mild suspense are fine, as long as the friendship stays the heart of it.
