Creativity
Creativity is how young children turn an idea in their head into something they can see, hear or hold: a drawing, a made-up song, a fort built from cushions. Shows that support it slow down enough to let an idea take shape, showing the messy middle instead of a finished result. That gives a child permission to try, change their mind, and try again.
For 2-year-olds
At this age creativity is mostly about discovering what happens when you act on the world: scribbling, stacking, banging, humming. There is no plan and no finished product, and that is exactly right. Look for calm, repetitive stories where a simple action is shown clearly and given time, so your toddler can follow what is happening. Familiar songs and refrains they can join in with count as creative moments too.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds start to name what they are making. A blob becomes a dog, a box becomes a boat, and pretend play takes off. Shows that pause on the question 'what could this be?' help here, especially when a character imagines something out loud and then plays it out. Look for a story where the idea comes from the child character, not handed to them ready-made by an adult.

For 4-year-olds
Now ideas get longer legs. A four-year-old can hold a plan in mind, gather materials, and stay with it, though frustration arrives when the result does not match the picture in their head. Helpful shows let a character try something, watch it fail, and adjust without anyone declaring it wrong. Stories built around making, fixing or inventing suit this age well, especially when the process gets more screen time than the reveal.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds create with other people. They negotiate roles, combine ideas, and care about whether the result works for an audience. This is also when comparison starts, so it matters that a story treats an unusual solution as interesting rather than odd. Look for characters who plan together, disagree about how to do it, and land somewhere neither of them started. Creativity applied to a real problem, not just art, resonates strongly now.

For 6-year-olds
At six, children can sustain a project across days and start to develop a personal style they recognise as their own. They also become their own harshest critic. Stories that show a character revising, scrapping a first attempt, or borrowing from a friend keep that self-criticism productive. Look for humour, some genuine plot, and characters whose creative choices carry real consequences in the story, since a six-year-old notices when a resolution is too easy.
