Problem solving

Problem solving is what happens when a child meets something that does not work yet: a tower that keeps falling, a lost toy, a friend who wants the same thing. Series built around this show the whole arc, noticing the trouble, trying something, adjusting, and getting there. Watched calmly, that arc gives children a picture of what to do with their own stuck moments.

For 2-year-olds

At two, a problem is usually physical and immediate: the lid will not fit, the shoe is on the wrong foot. Toddlers learn most from watching one small obstacle handled slowly, with plenty of time between noticing and fixing. Look for a series with a single, visible problem per story, spoken out loud in simple words, and a solution the child can see happening rather than one that is explained. Repetition helps here, seeing the same kind of fix again and again is how it sticks.

Eddie chooses to go on his own while his dad waits nearby, and he handles a too-loud dryer by using paper instead. It ends with Eddie confident and the steps repeated as a recap.

At a sunny beach, King Friday sets out to build a royal sandcastle but keeps getting frustrated when it does not work. Donkey Hodie and Purple Panda join him as the Royal Sandcastle Builders and discover that each of them calms down a different way, by running in small circles, by playing the bongos, or by doing a slow stretch. Once they have managed their frustration, they work out that adding water makes the sand hold together. They finish a castle that looks just like King Friday's real one.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds start guessing before they act. They can hold an idea in mind, try it, and notice it did not work, though frustration arrives fast. What helps at this age is a series where a character wonders out loud, tries something, and is allowed to be wrong without the story turning tense. Gentle questions to the child, or a short pause before the answer, invite them to think along. Emotional recovery matters as much as the solution itself.

For 4-year-olds

By four, children can plan a couple of steps ahead and enjoy the feeling of figuring something out themselves. Problems can now involve other people: sharing, taking turns, making a plan together. Look for stories where a character gathers what they need, tries an approach that partly works, and adjusts rather than starting over. Watching someone stay with a problem instead of abandoning it builds the persistence that four-year-olds are still growing.

For 5-year-olds

Five-year-olds can follow a problem that unfolds across a whole story and hold several possible answers at once. They ask why things work, not just how. For 6-year-olds

At six, problem solving stretches into the social and the abstract: an unfair situation, a plan that needs everyone's agreement, a puzzle with no obvious first step. Jessica agrees to look after Spike the hedgehog while her friend Stanley and Lulu fly to the Philippines to visit family. With help from her mom and Small Uncle, she learns to feed him, clean his cage, and handle him gently, discovering that banana slices coax the shy pet out. When Spike escapes and hides under the bed, Jessica recalls Stanley's advice and lures him back safely. Stanley returns to a happy, settled hedgehog and thanks Jessica for the great job.
