Asking for help
Asking for help is one of the first social skills a child practices, and it is harder than it looks. A child has to notice they are stuck, decide it is safe to say so, and find the words. Series that show characters getting stuck, speaking up, and being met kindly give children a script they can borrow in their own moments of frustration.
For 2-year-olds
At two, most asking still happens without words: a reached arm, a held-up shoe, a sound of frustration. What a toddler is learning is that signalling works and that a grown-up will come. Look for calm stories where a character struggles briefly, is noticed, and gets warm and unhurried support. Simple repeated phrases like 'help me' are useful here, because a two-year-old picks up language by hearing the same words in the same situations.

For 3-year-olds
Three-year-olds want to do things alone and often refuse help right up until frustration takes over. Stories help most when they show that gap: a character tries, gets stuck, feels annoyed, and then chooses to ask. Look for adults or older friends who wait instead of taking over, and who offer just enough so the child still finishes the job. It also helps when the story names the feeling, because putting words on frustration makes it easier to speak up next time.

For 4-year-olds
By four, children can ask, but the sticking point becomes pride and worry about looking small. Useful stories show that asking is a normal part of doing something difficult, not an admission of failure. Watch for characters who ask a peer, not only a grown-up, and who trade help back and forth. Stories where a plan needs several people are strong at this age, because they make helping feel like teamwork rather than rescue.

For 5-year-olds
Five-year-olds are working out who to ask and how. They start to see that different problems need different people: a friend for a game, an adult for something unsafe, an expert for something they do not know. Characters who admit they do not know something and go find out are the most useful model here.

For 6-year-olds
At six, social stakes matter. A child may stay silent in a group rather than be the one who does not understand, and may also be the one another child turns to. Stories help when they show both sides: someone gathering the courage to speak up, and someone responding without teasing. Look for slightly longer plots where a problem is genuinely too big for one character, and for moments where asking for help repairs a friendship rather than exposing a weakness.
