Nature

Nature is everything a child meets outside the front door: weather, water, soil, plants, insects, birds and animals. Young children learn it first with their hands and eyes, then with words and questions. A calm, well-made series can name what they already noticed and send them back outside looking closer.

For 2-year-olds

At two, nature is mostly sensory. A toddler notices a bird, a puddle, a dog, a leaf that crunches, and wants the word for it. Look for slow, quiet stories with clear images of one animal or one plant at a time, plenty of repetition, and lots of naming. Simple weather and daily routines outside are enough here; explanation is not what a two-year-old is after, recognition is.

For 3-year-olds

Three-year-olds start to link things: rain makes mud, seeds become flowers, animals have homes and babies. They love familiar creatures and predictable seasons. Series that follow one small adventure outdoors, with a gentle narrator naming what happens and why, fit best. Watch for stories that stay close to a child's own garden, farm or park rather than jumping around the world, and that leave time for a child to point and comment.

For 4-year-olds

By four, why-questions arrive in full force. Children want to know what animals eat, where the water goes, why leaves fall. This is where light explanation works: a story with a small problem to solve outdoors, a bit of looking closely, and an answer a child can repeat at dinner. Look for series that model curiosity and trying things out, and that keep the science short enough to stay a story.

For 5-year-olds

Five-year-olds can hold a chain of cause and effect and enjoy real facts. They like habitats, animal names, tracks, tools and knowing more than the grown-up in the room. Series that follow a question through observation to a clear answer suit them well, as do stories set in landscapes far from home. Keep an eye on how the excitement is delivered; a topic this interesting does not need loud, hurried presentation to hold a child.

For 6-year-olds

At six, nature becomes something to explore independently and even care for. Children can grasp food chains, life cycles, and the idea that habitats can be damaged or protected. Series with real depth, longer story arcs and friendships built around outdoor exploring hold their attention. Look for programmes that give facts honestly without frightening, and that end with something a child can actually do outside: build, plant, watch or count.
